IMPORTANT 2025 EVENT UPDATE

Sadly, we need to share some difficult news regarding the Tussock Traverse 2025. Unfortunately, due to low registrations, the event will not be able to go ahead this year.  

We are incredibly devastated and pushed as hard as we could to get it over the line. However, we faced numerous obstacles, including the ongoing closure of State Highway 1 and the removal of access to key areas due to the ongoing Chateau Tongariro disputes. This required significant changes to our registration plans, bus routes, the finish line and post-event barbecue venue. While we worked tirelessly to adapt, the increased costs and additional staffing needed to ensure the event’s safety have made it unviable without a significant increase in registrations.  

This was not a decision we made lightly, and we understand the disappointment this will cause. We feel it keenly too. As a charitable trust dedicated to supporting and promoting the Ruapehu region through our events, not being able to hold Tussock Traverse in 2025 hurts – especially after everything Ruapehu has been through over the last few years.

We are truly sorry for this outcome and for any inconvenience or disappointment it may cause. Tussock Traverse means so much to us and to our community, and we know how important it is to you as well. Your understanding and continued support truly mean the world to us, and we are committed to making the 2026 event one to remember.

Ohakune Events Charitable Trust 

2025 EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

The Ohakune Events Charitable Trust is absolutely stoked to unveil the 2025 event calendar for some of New Zealand’s most iconic trail running events in the stunning Ruapehu region.

As you’re all already aware, The Goat Adventure Run presented by La Sportiva will take place on Saturday, 18th January 2025. Entries have been open for just a few days, and we are already overwhelmed by the response – thank you for your incredible enthusiasm! If you haven’t secured your spot yet, don’t wait too long as places are filling fast.

We’re thrilled to confirm that the Tussock Traverse will also return on Saturday, 25th January 2025, providing another fantastic opportunity to experience the breathtaking trails of Tongariro National Park. Known for its rugged beauty and variety of course options, this is a great event for trail runners and walkers who are new to the sport, through to the experienced mountain goats looking for their next challenge.

Looking further ahead, the legendary ultramarathon event the Ring of Fire will make its highly anticipated comeback in 2026. We’re excited to be able to use the extra time to prepare for the event by creating a new course (still to circle the mighty Mt Ruapehu) for this bucket list event!

But wait there’s more… we’ve got something new on the horizon too! As the new owners of these incredible events we are also planning to add another exciting race to the calendar for March 2025. While we can’t reveal all the details just yet, we can promise it’s going to be epic if it goes ahead. Keep an eye out for more announcements in the coming months.
